Top 5 Films to Watch to Prepare For The Binge On Hulu

The Binge, directed by Jeremy Garelick (The Breakup, The Wedding Ringer) and written by Jordan VanDina (Animaniacs, Cocaine Hippos) is coming August 28th to Hulu from production company American High. The Binge is set in the year 2032 where after rampant chaos the nations of the world decide to make ALL drugs & alcohol illegal, except for 12 hours once a year, known as The Binge. Anyone 18 years old and up can participate (all other laws still apply, like DUI’s, so remember to binge safely in your home). The film follows 3 first time Bingers (Skyler Gisondo, Dexter Darden, Eduardo Franco) as they try to make it to the hottest Binge party in town. The film also stars Vince Vaughn.

As with all good binging you should really ease into it. So to prepare you, I’ve created this list of the best 5 drug fueled films to watch in preparation for The Binge.

5. Super Troopers

Super Troopers

Super Troopers

Meow we have to start right meow with this film. Created by Broken Lizard, a comedy troupe formed in Hamilton, NY (just a mere hour away from The Binge’s filming location of Syracuse, NY). Super Troopers follows a group of slackoff VT State Troopers who must prove their worth by outdoing the local law enforcement. A series of pranks, mishaps, LOTS OF DRUGS, syrup chugging, and bullet proof jock straps are just some of the --shenanigans-- that occur.

4. Half Baked

Half Baked

Half Baked

Directed by Tamra Davis (Billy Madison, and the ill fated Britney film Crossroads), this stars Dave Chappelle and Jim Breuer(the guy that always looked stoned on SNL) as they try to get their friend out of jail, who killed a diabetic horse by feeding it too many munchies. They decide to sell weed from a pharmaceutical company that Chappelle’s character works at. Add in a double performance of Chappelle as both Thurgood and the rapper Sir Smokes-A-Lot, and your typical Jim Breuer weed humor and you’re in for a great trip (get it?).

3. Pineapple Express

Brought to you by the team behind Superbad, this film features Seth Rogen, James Franco, and a stellar performance from Danny McBride. Pineapple Express follows the story of Dale Denton (Rogen) who, while purchasing a very rare form of weed called Pineapple Express, witnesses a murder by a crooked cop. Now he and his dealer Saul (Franco) must go on the lamb to avoid being caught and murdered. Not only is it an underrated comedy, it’s also just a fun film.

2. Cheech & Chong’s Up In Smoke

Up in Smoke

Up in Smoke

Based on the TV Series of the same name, this was the first introduction to Cheech & Chong (Cheech Marin, Tommy Chong) on the big screen. Recognized as one of the first - and biggest - drug comedies these characters set the bar for ALL drug/raunchy comedies to come. When Pedro and Anthony are inadvertently deported to Mexico, they end up getting a van to drive back over the border. Unbeknownst to them, this van is made entirely of weed(because, duh). After unwittingly avoiding the police, and snagging a few female companions along the way, they make their way back to LA to perform a gig. The quintessential drug comedy.

And now...it’s time…

1. Scarface

Scarface

Scarface

How could we possibly talk about drug movies and not reference the king himself? Every guy you know had this poster on their wall during their college years. All of them. They probably still do, to this day. Scarface is one of Al Pacino’s ultimate performances. Every single speech Tony Montana makes is quotable. The Cuban immigrant (played by an Italian American, because Hollywood) who built a drug empire. If you have not watched this film, oh my god, just go watch this film immediately. You won’t regret it.

Most of these films are available to watch on Hulu(with appropriate channel add-ons). Catch The Binge on Hulu starting August 28th!
